Heating Oil Leak in Garden.
One of our recent home oil spill emergency call outs was from a very concerned Dublin homeowner. Niamh had discovered she had a heating oil leak in her garden.
After returning home from working abroad, Niamh noticed there was a very strong smell of oil outside her back door. The grass in the back garden was also badly discolored. She immediately contacted her oil supplier to try and empty the remaining oil from her to tank into a temporary container. Unfortunately, there was very little kerosene left in the tank. There was a large split joint in the plastic tank, similar to the split home heating tank below.
It’s estimated that approximately 300 litres of kerosene oil had leaked from the split joint in the plastic oil tank into ground. The volume of oil spill was enough to kill grass growth nearby and prevent any re-growth.

Have you checked your oil tank for leaks?
Home heating oil storage tanks are exposed to harsh Irish weather and heavy loadings after a fill of oil. The normal lifespan of a plastic oil storage tank is approximately 20 years, if installed and maintained as per manufacturers specifications.
Summer is the ideal time to check your oil tank for the following;
- Cracks, splits or dents to your oil tank
- Whitening or discoloration of the oil tank
- Bulging or deformation of the oil tank
- Smell of fuel or kerosene near the tank or in your home
- Oil staining to concrete footpaths, gravel, grass, bricks etc.
- Damage to grass, plants or trees from an oil leak
- Check the base of your oil tank for cracking or signs of subsidence
Home heating oil tanks must be installed by competent personnel – OFTEC Registered Technicians, in accordance with supplied instructions and prevailing statutory requirements.
